30-Day Song Challenge

Okay, I realize I can't link up to Krystal any more, but that's not the point. Towards the end of last month, Krystal's Kitsch began a challenge that concerned music. Well, I am a music teacher--or I was when I had a regular teaching job--and that was my major in college. I am a singer, and I thought that doing this challenge on my own would be good for my blog. And maybe you'd learn some more about me. So here goes.

Day 1: Your favorite song

Now, this is a hard one. For years, my favorite song was "Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again" from The Phantom of the Opera. I loved that musical ever since I saw it on Broadway back in 1992. I once fancied I would play that role on Broadway opposite Michael Crawford, but that is another story.

In more recent years, this song has somewhat faded. It is still one of my favorites. But another song has come along. A couple years ago, I heard the song "Love Story" by Taylor Swift.

I was not an immediate Taylor Swift fan. It took some time, but she finally won me over. And when I heard this song, I believe that God sent it to me as a song of hope. While it's not the story of my friend in England and me, in some ways there are parallels. I love the music video. I think she looks quite beautiful in the video, and the words are so wonderful. My favorite lines:

"I got tired of waiting, wondering if you were ever coming around,
My faith in you was fading,
When I met you on the outskirts of town
And I said, Romeo, save me, I've been feeling so alone.
I keep waiting for you, but you never come.
Is this in my head? I don't know what to think.
He knelt to the ground and pulled out a ring..."

At this point in the song, it has the most beautiful chord progression. Probably Taylor Swift's finest chord progression. Similar to the chord progression in Michael Buble's "Haven't Met You Yet." I never tire of hearing this song.

Just so you know, I won't be mentioning too many Christian songs. I love the old hymns ("It is Well With My Soul" is my favorite of those), but I find that secular music resonates better with me. So if that offends you, you might want to skip these posts. I only say that because some legalistic Christians say we should only listen to Christian music.

First day's challenge completed!
